What you need to know

Here the garden isn’t in charge: the calendar is

In Torremolinos hardly any garden is just a garden. It’s in front of an apartment that gets let, an entrance that hundreds of people walk past, or a hotel. That decides when work can be done and when it can’t, and it’s the first thing we ask.

The gap between two bookings

Sometimes it’s three days and sometimes it’s four hours. You can work in either, but you can’t do the same things: whatever is started has to be finished and presentable the same day. A half-done garden on check-in day costs more than leaving the job until the following week. That’s why what we ask you for is the calendar, not the key.

Trees that ran out of room

It’s the legacy of the boom. In the urbanisations of the sixties and seventies, what is now a twelve-metre tree was planted two metres from the façade. The roots lift the paving and get where they shouldn’t, and by that stage it isn’t a gardening problem any more. Cutting it back from the top every year holds nothing back: what grows underground keeps on growing.

A question of season

The big jobs, in winter. And it isn’t for our sake

Pruning hard in July or starting on a renovation in August is a bad idea for two reasons that point the same way. The plant takes it very badly: taking off canopy at thirty degrees puts full sun on bark that was in the shade, and it scorches.

And it’s worse for you. It’s when your building is full, when the noise bothers more people and when a cordoned-off area turns up in more photos. In January there’s none of that, and on top of that the plant is dormant, and the cut starts to close as soon as it comes back into growth.

That’s why we suggest an annual plan: maintenance all year round, and the noisy work concentrated where it doesn’t get in the way.

Where we work

Areas of Torremolinos

We cover the whole municipality. Each area needs something different.

  • La Carihuela and El Bajondillo

Right by the sea, with everything that brings: the salt burns the edges of the leaves and eats through sprinklers and screws faster than inland. You plant what tolerates it and expect to replace fittings more often than usual.

  • The centre and upper Bajondillo

Dense communities, inner courtyards and lots of terraces. Detailed work, and timing matters: we come and go without making a racket, and the cuttings go down in bags in the lift, not in a wheelbarrow through the entrance hall.

  • Montemar and Los Álamos

Urbanisations from the sixties and seventies with trees that are now mature, often planted too close to the building. Here the big job isn’t mowing the lawn, it’s deciding what to do with trees that have run out of room.

  • Playamar and the hotel area

Gardens that are on show all year and can’t be left half-done. We work to a fixed annual plan with set visits, so a long job never coincides with high occupancy.

Common questions

Questions about Torremolinos

I have a holiday-let apartment. Can you come in between bookings?

Yes, and that’s how we normally work here. You send us the check-in and check-out dates and we fit the visit into the gap. If the gap is a matter of hours, we come first thing and leave before check-in. What we don’t do is start something we can’t leave finished and presentable the same day.

Do you work in high season?

Maintenance, yes, always. What we avoid in July and August is building work and hard pruning: they’re noisy, they leave the garden half-done for days and, in the case of pruning, it’s when the plant takes it worst. That gets scheduled for winter, which is also when your building is at its quietest.

I have a huge ficus right up against the building. What can be done?

First, we need to see it. In the older urbanisations here it’s a classic: it was planted small two metres from the façade, and sixty years later the roots are lifting the paving or reaching the foundations. The options range from reduction pruning to transplanting or removal, and which one is right depends on the tree, the damage and what the community allows. What doesn’t work is cutting it back from the top every year: that doesn’t stop the roots.

And the garden around the pool?

It’s an area with its own rules. It’s best to choose plants that don’t drop fine leaves or fruit, because it all ends up in the pool and the filter, and to keep roots well away from the pool surround. If you’ve already got something planted that’s causing problems, we’ll take a look: often it’s solved by changing two or three plants, not the whole garden.

Advice from your local gardener

October in Torremolinos

The best time of year to plant

Here you plant in autumn, not spring. The soil is still warm from the summer but the air no longer punishes, so the plant puts down roots all through the winter and reaches the next summer with its root system in place. Whatever goes in in May spends its first August suffering.

It’s also when the rain does part of the work: after the first storms you can cut the watering back a lot, but don’t switch it off altogether. A dry October is perfectly possible in Torremolinos, and a newly planted hedge won’t forgive a week without water.

And before the cold sets in, check the drippers one by one. After a summer working flat out there’s always one blocked with lime. You won’t notice it in winter… until June.
