What you need to know

There’s no one kind of garden in Mijas

It’s a long municipality that runs from the beach up to the Sierra de Mijas, and that shows far more than you’d think when it comes to looking after a garden.

Up top: altitude and cold nights

Mijas Pueblo sits at around 400 metres. In winter the nights get quite cold and there can be the odd frost, which doesn’t happen on the coast. Subtropical plants that cope perfectly well in La Cala get burnt by the cold up here. The calendar changes too: pruning comes later than on the coast.

Down below: salt spray and direct sun

On the coastal strip it doesn’t frost, but the air carries salt and burns the edges of the leaves. What works there are Mediterranean plants and those that tolerate salt, and the watering has to be adjusted to flush the soil every so often. Putting in any pretty plant from the garden centre without taking this into account is an expensive mistake.

Legal obligation

Plot clearance, before the heat sets in

If you own a plot in Mijas, you’re required to keep it clear of dry vegetation to prevent fires. It isn’t advice from the town hall: it’s an obligation on the owner, and it’s watched more closely here than in other places because half the sierra is pine forest and there are urbanisations right up against the hillside.

The practical problem is timing. Almost everyone remembers in May, once the notices are already out, and in those weeks there isn’t a machine free anywhere in the area. If you have it booked in March or April, it gets done when you want, not when you can.

The exact deadlines are published every year by Mijas Town Hall. If you call us, we’ll tell you how the clearance season is looking at that point.

Where we work

Areas and urbanisations in Mijas

We cover the whole municipality. Each area needs something different.

  • Las Lagunas

The most urban part of the municipality, right next to Fuengirola. Here the work is mostly communal garden maintenance for owners’ communities, plus the patios and terraces of ground-floor flats and penthouses.

  • Mijas Pueblo

Altitude, slopes and terraced plots. Small, very exposed gardens, with big pots and climbers, and the only part of the municipality where you have to allow for the cold at night.

  • La Cala de Mijas

A mix of homes lived in all year and holiday villas. Plenty of lawn and hedge, and clients who want the garden ready before they arrive for the summer.

  • Cerros del Águila and La Alquería

Hillside urbanisations with large plots. What comes up most here is plot clearance, pruning at height and properly planned drip irrigation.

  • El Faro, Torrenueva and Mijas Golf

The strip of coast to the east and the area around the golf course. Villas with a plot and a lot of boundary hedging, which is the job that sets the calendar here.

If your urbanisation isn’t on the list, ask us: we go everywhere within the municipality.

Common questions

Questions about Mijas

Do you work in Mijas Pueblo as well as on the coast?

Yes, we cover the whole municipality. It’s worth knowing they aren’t the same garden: in the village, at around 400 metres, there are cold nights and the odd frost in winter, while on the coast it doesn’t frost but the salt spray punishes the leaves. That changes which plants cope and when it’s time to prune.

When does a plot in Mijas have to be cleared?

Before the summer. Owners are required to keep their plots free of dry vegetation to prevent fires, and in Mijas it’s watched especially closely because of the forest on the sierra. Most of the work is packed in between April and June, so if you wait until the heat arrives you’ll have to join the queue.

How much does garden maintenance cost in Mijas?

It depends mainly on the size and how often we come. A villa garden with a fortnightly visit is nothing like the communal gardens of an urbanisation. We fix the price in writing once we’ve seen the garden or a few photos, and it doesn’t change afterwards.

Do you look after the garden of a holiday rental villa?

Yes, and in La Cala and Las Lagunas it’s a good part of what we do. We agree how often we come, we go in while nobody’s at home and we send photos after every visit. If the villa is in Calahonda or Riviera del Sol, have a look at the Calahonda page: we explain it all there, because it’s the area where almost all the work is for owners who don’t live here.

Advice from your local gardener

October in Mijas

The best time of year to plant

Here you plant in autumn, not spring. The soil is still warm from the summer but the air no longer punishes, so the plant puts down roots all through the winter and reaches the next summer with its root system in place. Whatever goes in in May spends its first August suffering.

It’s also when the rain does part of the work: after the first storms you can cut the watering back a lot, but don’t switch it off altogether. A dry October is perfectly possible in Mijas, and a newly planted hedge won’t forgive a week without water.

And before the cold sets in, check the drippers one by one. After a summer working flat out there’s always one blocked with lime. You won’t notice it in winter… until June.
